  1. Archos has been making tablets for a few years now i own the Archos 7, I noticed that all the reviews were saying in effect, that it is archos’s response to the IPad. This is entirely untrue, Archos has had plans for the release of this items since before christmas, If anything the IPad is a response to the Archos 9. If I may add the IPad has a maximum hard drive of 64gb, which is to say the least very small. The Archos 7 has a capacity of 160-320gb, and the Archos 9 has a capacity of 80gb still more than the IPad. On another note I thought it very funny that the “IPad” was being joked about as a woman’s toiletry item aka the resolution for that monthly problem.

The Archos 9 is a little misleading. Don’t get me wrong. As a Window’s tablet running the latest 7 Operating System it is amazing! But as an Archos product, (which I LOVE) it falls extremely short. The only thing it shares with the past archos product is its vTuner. (which came bundled, by the way) If you are looking at this hoping to get the latest and greatest Archos product, don’t. This is a Windows tablet. As I’ve already stated the WINDOWS 7 tablet is amazing. The ability to place shortcuts on the taskbar is awesome. This leaves your desktop free of icon clutter. The task manager is designed so that you are able to shut down only the programs you are running and not critical system which can cause a system restart. These are just a few of the many new things I’ve appreciated. If you are searching for the best Archos player stick with the Archos 7. If you are searching for the best Windows tablet pick up the Archos 9.

Mine is already going back for a refund.

The Touchscreen is horrible and inaccurate, video playback is unwatchable, every thing about it is slow beyond the point of usability.

    2-3 minutes boot up time.

10 seconds to open a browser window.

30 seconds to come out of standby. (Hibernation doesn’t even work, which just adds to the terrible battery life)

    This thing is a joke.

This device is so weak, thus so slow. You could fall asleep waiting for it to boot up or perform any function. It could not download anything including itunes, MS office 2007, upgrade to windows 7 home premium, etc. Customer support is the worst. You have to wait on the phone for more than 30 mn to get to someone. Don’t make the same mistake I did by investinng on this abysmal gadget. By the way, the keyboard is so obstructive as to mask half of the screen. This expensive gadget does not even come close to the speed and performance of an apple ipod touch/phone! A biggest disappointment!

  5. The Archos 9 PC tablet boasts on its box that it is “The future of Netbooks.” While it is certainly slender and aesthetically appealing, in the end its portability cannot outweigh its lackluster performance.

Although this Tablet runs Windows 7 Starter Edition, the Atom Z510 processor seems underpowered to actually deliver satisfying, crisp Windows or application performance. Apps open slowly and everything just seems a bit sluggish.

The Touchscreen also delivers uneven results. At times, it is responsive and intuitive, but just as often your screen touches fail to register on the virtual keyboard, assuming it doesn’t just completely freeze over, which it does on occasion. I have also found that the touch screen will not work in direct sunlight – it becomes completely unresponsive and frozen, so even if you have a wireless connection that reaches your backyard (as I do) don’t expect the screen to work.

I only own one Apple product, an Itouch, but Apple really does seem to set the gold standard for touch screen responsiveness. For better or worse, I believe anyone who has used an Iphone or an Itouch expects that same performance and responsiveness from a touchscreen, and the Archos’ touchscreen experience pales in comparison to the much less expensive Itouch.

On the left side of the device, there is a button to bring up the virtual keyboard, and below that are two buttons that serve as a left and right mouse button. On the other side is a small micropad that controls the mouse pointer. Although I have smaller hands than most, I still found the micropad difficult to use to control the mouse pointer, although that could improve with practice.

Multimedia performance, where this product should really shine, was a bit disappointing. Movies streamed via the built in Wi-Fi from Netflix were choppy. I do not attribute the choppiness to internet speed, as I have fiber optic, 20 MBPS FIOS internet service, and I watch movies via Netflix streaming without problem on both my PC and TV via an Xbox360. I was hoping it was simply a buffering issue, but even well into a movie it was still a bit choppy on the Archos. The movie watching experience was certainly adequate, but I was expecting better performance. I suspect the integrated video, Atom processor, and mere 1 GB of memory is simply not powerful enough to deliver consistent, high frames per second.

Battery life is also a bit weak. After just an hour of basic web browsing and exploring, the battery was drained to approximately 25%. This does not fare well for a product that exists to serve portable, on-the-go use.

Overall, whether or not you will appreciate this product will hinge on what you want to use it for. If you travel a lot and mainly want something smaller than a laptop to only check email and surf the web, this product will meet those needs, but not much more. And at the $550 asking price at the time of this writing, that’s asking quite a bit of cash to perform the same core functions handled arguably just as well by most smartphones and even an Itouch. In the end, I think the Archos delivers average performance at a premium price. There are cheaper netbooks available, and until the Archos 9 drops in price, it won’t deliver a true value relative to its cost.
